The flat-coated retriever (FCR) is often referred to as the "Peter Pan" of the retriever breeds, because, like Peter Pan, they never grow up! They are slower to mature both physically and mentally than the other retriever breeds and have a "play drive" that is with them their entire lives.

The flat-coat is a medium sized dog. Males range in height from 25 to 24.5 inches and females are one to two inches shorter. Their coloring is solid black or solid liver (dark brown). The coat is of medium length and requires weekly brushing to keep it in good condition.

The flat-coat makes an excellent family pet if you like a bouncy, tail-wagging, ready-to-play dog. Flat-coats require close interaction with their family and are not suited to living their lives in outdoor kennels. They are extremely intelligent dogs and are capable of figuring things out for themselves. Obedience training is necessary to make them truly enjoyable pets.
