The Australian Shepherd is a well-balanced dog of medium size. It is attentive and animated, showing strength and stamina combined with incredible agility. The coat is of moderate length and comes in a variety of colors. An identifying characteristic of the Australian Shepherd is the natural, or docked, bobtail.

The Australian Shepherd is an intelligent, primarily working dog, of strong herding and guarding instinct. It is a wonderful companion, easily trained, and very good with children. Though reserved with strangers, the Aussie does not exhibit shyness and should never demonstrate aggressiveness towards people or other pets.

The Aussie needs time to become familiar with a new acquaintance. It usually does not take long for a person unfamiliar to the Aussie to become its new best friend. The Aussie is very loyal and will not rest until it has accounted for all humans and pets in the house.

The grooming needs of the Australian Shepherd are minimal. The Aussie should be brushed on a regular basis to keep the coat clean and free from tangles. The coat behind the ears and on the elbows needs particular attention as it tends to be finer in these areas and is prone to developing mats.
